One Choice, One Person, Our Planet

2011

Commissioned by: Tennessee Department of Transportation commission

One Choice, One Person, Our Planet was located on the river-facing side of the Central Parking Garage at 35 Monroe Avenue April 28th — June 3rd during Memphis in May 2011 and displayed an anti-idling message targeting passing pedestrians and motorists.

The piece features two living grass walls in the shape of trucks, with a “reverse graffiti” mural evoking vehicle exhaust, created using a pressure-washing technique that actually uses selective cleaning to create an image. Within the exhaust plume, the message, “Getting 0 miles per gallon stinks. Stop idling. Stop polluting.” is visible.

One Choice, One Person, Our Planet's goal is to raise awareness about vehicle idling—specifically that idling engines pollute the air and waste money and fuel. Reducing idling is a goal of Clear the Air Tennessee, and is listed as one of the program’s SIMPLE steps to cleaner air: S-Slow Down, I-Idle Less, M-Maintain Your Vehicle, P-Plan Your Trips, L-Leave Your Car at Home, and E-Educate Others. The program targets the 16 counties in Tennessee where air quality levels fall below the national standard, promoting driving tips that will help to reduce air pollution.

Clear the Air Tennessee is a statewide program to improve air quality by changing driving habits. Combined with other important air quality improvement programs around the state, Clear the Air Tennessee is committed to showing drivers how SIMPLE it is to reduce air pollution.
